CNN: Russian vessel Ursa Major may have been struck by a Western torpedo to prevent the transfer of nuclear technology to North KoreaThe sinking of the Russian cargo ship Ursa Major in international waters between Spain and Algeria in December 2024 may have been the result of a rare and highly risky intervention by Western militaries, who were attempting to thwart Russia's transfer of nuclear technology to North Korea, according to a CNN investigation.Details. According to data from the Spanish investigation, which a source outlined to CNN, a 50 by 50 cm hole in the hull of Ursa Major was likely caused by a Barracuda-type torpedo. Only the United States, several NATO countries, Russia, and Iran possess such weaponry. Torpedoes create an air bubble in front of them that reduces water resistance, allowing them to reach extremely high speeds and penetrate a target's hull. Some models inflict damage without using explosives. However, Mike Plunkett, an analyst at Janes (a company specializing in defense intelligence), suggested that a more likely explanation is a magnetic mine: "It looks like a shaped charge attached to the ship's hull."What was on board? Interest in what happened on the ship and its cargo was heightened by a surge in military activity around Ursa Major after the sinking. U.S. radiation reconnaissance aircraft WC135-R flew over the wreck site twice in the past year (on August 28, 2025, and February 6 of this year). And a week after the sinking, the Russian intelligence vessel Yantar approached the site, after which four more explosions occurred.Chronology of the sinking. CNN has reconstructed the timeline of events leading up to the sinking. The vessel set sail on December 11 with two large "hatch covers," 129 empty containers, and two large Liebherr cranes. Several weeks before the voyage, Oboronlogistika, the ship's owner, reported receiving a license to transport nuclear materials. On December 22, the vessel abruptly slowed down, prompting Spanish rescue services to contact the crew and check if it was in distress. The crew responded that everything was fine. However, about 24 hours later, the vessel veered sharply off course and at 11:53 on December 23 transmitted an urgent distress signal. Three explosions occurred on the starboard side, likely in the engine room area, killing two crew members. After that, the ship developed a severe list, as seen in videos posted on social media. The 14 surviving crew members evacuated to a lifeboat, after which they were picked up by the Spanish rescue vessel Salvamar Draco. At 19:27, a Spanish warship arrived at the scene to provide assistance. However, half an hour later, one of the Russian warships escorting Ursa Major ordered all vessels to stay at least two nautical miles away, and later demanded the immediate return of the rescued sailors.Spanish rescue services insisted on continuing the rescue operation and dispatched a helicopter to the ship to search for survivors. According to a source familiar with the investigation, Ursa Major did not appear to be a vessel that would sink soon. However, at 21:50, the Russian ship Ivan Gren fired a series of red signal flares over the incident area, after which four more explosions followed. Spain's National Seismic Network told CNN that four seismic signals, resembling explosions from underwater mines or onshore quarry blasts, were recorded in the area.By 23:10, Ursa Major was declared sunk. The ship's cargo. The Spanish investigation states that the most likely cargo on board Ursa Major consisted of VM-4SG model reactors, which are commonly installed on Russian Project 667 nuclear submarines.Under pressure, as a CNN source claims, the ship's captain Igor Anisimov confessed that components of two nuclear reactors, similar to those used on submarines, were being transported. Anisimov, according to the CNN source, believed the vessel was to be redirected to the North Korean port of Rason.
