On April 1st, Macedonian Air Force and Air Defence Force (Makedonsko Voeno Vozduhoplovstvo i Protivvozdusna Odbrana or VV i PVO) for the first time officially demonstrated its two Mi-17 and two Mi-24V helicopters that have been upgraded with Aviators Night Vision Head-Up Display (ANVIS/HUD) System by Elbit Systems of Israel. The helicopters involved in the modernization that enables NATO-compatible night-flying operations are Mi-17 Hip-Hs serialed VAM-302 and VAM-303 that are operational with the 301 Transport Helicopter Squadron (301 Transporten Helikopterski Skvadron) and Mi-24V Hind-Es serialed 209 and 210 that are operational with the 201 Combat Helicopter Squadron (201. Borben Helikopterski Skvadron).
The process of serious preparing of Macedonias Air Force for contributing to NATO operations has been initiated in December 2003 when Macedonian Government awarded Elbit Systems of Israel with a US 2 million contract for limited (first-stage) upgrade of two Mi-17 and two Mi-24V helicopters. The upgrade of selected helicopters started at Petrovec air base, near Skopje, in February 2004 and was completed some eight months later. All four aircraft involved in this modernization are now again operational and have redesigned cockpit layout, adopted for night vision goggle (NVG) operations, and are also equipped with ANVIS/HUD System. By equipping its aircraft with ANVIS/HUDs, Macedonian Air Force become one of a very few operators of Night-operation Mi-17 and Mi-24 helicopters worldwide, even before Air Forces of NATO-member countries Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Bulgaria.
Satisfied with the successful completionof initially
signed contract, Macedonian Government and Elbit Systems are now very close to signing of a new contract for more comprehensive (second-stage) upgrade for six Macedonian Air Force helicopters. Since the Republic of Macedonia has announced that it will contribute to NATO with two Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) helicopters, the Macedonian Ministry of Defence now plans to initiate second stage of upgrade for the two Macedonian Mi-17s that were involved in the first stage. Additional upgrade of Macedonian Hips will mean equipping them with all new communication, identification and navigation systems that among others will include a new ILS, VOR, DME, multifunctional displays and a digital moving map display that will replace the

earlier paper map system. In addition to second stage Mi-17 upgrade, the Macedonian Air Force also plans more advanced upgrade for another four Mi-24 helicopters. The second-stage Mi-24 upgrade package will mean equipping another four Macedonian Hinds with the complete first-stage upgrade, plus complete second-stage Mi-17 upgrade supplemented by improved self-defence systems (new radar warning receivers and chaff/flare dispensers) and a third-generation gyro-stabilised multi-sensor payload (TV camera, FLIR, auto-tracker and laser rangefinder/laser designator), integrated with helmet sight, multifunctional displays and digital moving map display.
