“Untrue and absurd are the accusations for alleged anti-Greek activity of
the American consul in Thessalonika, Hoyt Brian Lee”, stated yesterday
the spokesperson of the American State Department, Tom Casey.
Тhe reaction followed the accusations that the American consul
undertook activities against the territorial integrity of Greece,
i.e., had meetings with representatives of the Macedonian and Turkish
minorities. The accusations against the American consul were
brought in the Greek media which cited documents by the Greek secret service.
“Those are totally untrue and scandalous accusations against distinguished American diplomats”, stated Casey commenting the
accusations that “Lee had serious undiplomatic and illegal activities
against the territorial integrity of northern Greece in attempt to provide
political benefits to the non-existing minorities in Greece.” The
documents were marked “highly confidential” and state that the American consul in Thessaloniki on May 14th contacted the leaders of the party of Macedonians – “Rainbow” and the leaders of the Muslim minority in West Thrace as well as other Greek citizens.
According to the document, the purpose of the meetings was to
realize the alleged American plan for destabilization of Thrace and Northern Greece i.e., the creation of crisis in the entire country.
Commenting the accusations against Lee, Casey stated that the entire American diplomatic staff in Greece conducts itself in accordance with the role of the diplomats everywhere in the world, and that means discussing not only with representatives of the host Government but also with members of the NGO sector, including persons that do not always agree with the authorities.
