Part of a DoF’s job is building the squad. That means choosing the manager, handling contracts, sales and purchases. Alongside the manager, the DoF is arguably the most important employee at the club.
Our “top of the class wannabe manager” DoF had months and months to prepare us for a season in which we’re playing four competitions.
What did he actually do? Who did he buy? Who did he sell?
In the three months since the end of the season, he has managed to buy Chelsea’s reserve for £50m and activate Tielemans’ release clause. That’s it.
The season is about to start and we have one left-back in the squad and only three midfielders, none of whom is a proper No. 6.
Our backup striker is a player the manager doesn’t trust. Our backup winger is a player we don’t even want at the club.
So explain to me how he hasn’t failed and misjudged the market?
If we’re going to dismiss our reported "interest" in Tonali, Anderson, Tchouaméni, Koné, Scott, Anderson, Baleba, Hall, MLS etc. as nothing more than journalists making things up, then… what exactly was he doing?
Where are all these players that Southampton’s DoF supposedly scouted and identified before the summer?
There are only two possibilities: either he badly misjudged the market and underestimated the prices and competition for certain players, or his overall squad-building plan was simply poor.
Either way, the conclusion is the same: the guy is not doing his job well. Which is nothing to be shocked with because he is completely out of his depth.
