7 years after their last win, Bhutan -
the world's lowest-ranked football nation - made history over the past week.
Not content with claiming their first-ever FIFA World Cup™ qualifying victory in the first of back-to-back meetings with Sri Lanka, the Himalayan nation then followed that up with another, securing a place in the second round.
This represents a massive achievement for a team that, previously, had won just two matches in their entire 58-match history. Their last home fixture, in fact, ended in an 8-2 reverse to the Maldives, while they infamously lost 20-0 to Kuwait in a 2000 AFC Asian Cup qualifier. Chokey Nima, their coach, is a veteran of that notorious defeat but has now secured spectacular redemption against a Sri Lanka side 35 places above Bhutan, and which is able to draw from a population 26 times higher.
Go Bhutan!
