Big, fat military cargo planes are a lot like big, fat passenger planes. Both have cavernous interiors, neither has guns. The first carry troops and weapons, the second vacationers and luggage. The similarities are enough that Airbus, the leading maker of passenger aircraft - it has delivered more aircraft than Boeing for seven years running - thought it sensible to get into the military business.

The result is the A400M, a four-engine brute with distinctive eight-blade propellers, curved like scimitar blades. The first model flew last month in Seville, Spain, where it is being assembled. Thousands of Airbus employees cheered the event. One who didn't was no less than the CEO of Airbus itself, Germany's Tom Enders. ...
