Грчкиот производител Fage го тужи Американскиот Chobani за употребата “грчки јогурт“.

Fage sues Chobani in UK over use of 'Greek' yogurt description

According to Fage, most consumers understand the term 'Greek yogurt' to be an indication of origin. But Chobani disagrees. It says 'Greek' refers to the straining process used to make the yogurt and not a product made in Greece.

On its website, Chobani says: “Many people think that 'Greek' yogurt refers to where we make our yogurt, but it actually describes how we make our yogurt. We make Chobani Greek Yogurt the authentic way, never adding any thickeners, gelatins, or stabilizers. Instead, we strain our yogurt to remove excess liquid. This is why Chobani is so thick, creamy, and packed with protein”.

Unlike hundreds of products in Europe that enjoy a special “protected” status from European authorities (the list includes Parmesan cheese, Champaign and feta cheese - foods that the EU says have distinct flavors and qualities from specific geographic regions), the term ‘Greek yogurt’ does not have special protected status from the EU. This is something the Greek government would have to request.

A spokeswoman for Chobani, however, told The Grocer: “Similar to French fries, Black Forest Gateaux, Yorkshire pudding and Cheddar cheese, which are understood to be products made following a particular recipe or method, Greek yogurt refers to an authentic straining process”.
