The Path
Flickering lanterns,
Creaking and suspended,
The pearly haze
Lights up my way.
Harrowing midnight,
Invisible whispers,
Shadows grow,
'Neath the bleary pall.
Along the path
A cold wind shimmers,
Streaks of gray
Throughout my soul.
Starlight glimmers,
Fading slowly,
Tiny remnants
Of days gone by.
Yet I continue
A pointless journey
Blue-gray flagstones,
Pave the way.
Acrid fog bellows,
And renders me silent.
Heavy mist rising,
Obscuring my fate.
The vapors dance
To a psalm of desolation,
Tendriled arms,
All coiled and sharp.
Waning moon heavy,
In a sky black and pallid.
Ebony streaks of
distant strife.
My timidity challenged
By the voice of darkness,
Misgivings unquelled
Are held asway.
Alarm and dread
Filling my coffers,
My footsteps never falter,
My eyes never flinch.
Achilles’ footsteps
Sound through streets
Dark and silent;
They flitter away,
To a deadman’s hymn.
Yet I pursue
My solemn journey
A ghost of tomorrow--
To the world
Forever dead.[SIZE=+1]
