Istanbul, October 18 (MIA) - President Gjorge Ivanov met Sunday with Pontiff of the Constantinople Patriarchy, Ecumenical Patriarch Batholomew, MIA reports from Istanbul.
President Ivanov said after the meeting that the Ecumenical Patriarch demonstrated interest about the situation in Macedonia, but also knowledge on regional developments.
"We referred to regional topics and situation in Macedonia, which aims at establishing good relations will everyone", stated President Ivanov.
He stressed that Saturday's closure of the Kosovo border demarcation issue represents a good signal for the region, an example of how Macedonia practices good traditions that contribute to Balkan peace and welfare.
According to Ivanov, Patriarch Batholomew was well-informed about the situation with the Macedonian Orthodox Church, adding that pontiffs should decide on the issue by themselves, since the churches are solely competent for the problem.
Moreover, Ivanov presented Batholomew with an invitation to take part at the Second World Conference on Dialogue among Religious in Ohrid in May 2010.
The Bartholomew meeting marks the end of Ivanov's official visit to Turkey, which included talks with President Abdullah Gul, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Parliament Speaker Mehmet Ali Sahin.
Later in the day, President Ivanov departs for a visit to Israel, where he is to meet with counterpart Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Macedonian President will also take part at international conference "Facing Tomorrow 2009" and meet with Jews of Macedonian descent.
