Soccer-Barca give Real footballing lesson at Bernabeu
By Simon Baskett

Updated: 4:13 p.m. ET Nov. 19, 2005

MADRID - A virtuoso Ronaldinho double and a superb opportunist strike from Samuel Eto'o secured Barcelona a stunning 3-0 win over arch-rivals Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Saturday.

Eto'o scored the opener against his former club when he snapped up the ball on the edge of the area, turned inside a gaggle of defenders and fired under goalkeeper Iker Casillas in the 15th minute
Ronaldinho, fancied to add the European Footballer of the Year to the World Player award he won last year, struck after a dazzling solo run on the hour and completed the rout with his second after a mesmerising piece of skill 12 minutes from time.

Barcelona's 14th league victory at the Bernabeu put the champions top of the Primera Liga for the first time this season and made Frank Rijkaard the only Barca coach to lead the Catalans to two victories in Real Madrid's stadium.

Despite having Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane back from injury, Real rarely threatened the Barca back four and were jeered off the pitch by their own fans who had little choice but to marvel at the ease of their opponents' victory.

JITTERY START

Both sides made a somewhat jittery start but it was Barca who soon took control with Xavi and Deco marshalling the midfield and the dynamic Argentine teenager Lionel Messi a constant menace to the Real back four.

The live-wire Eto'o gave Real an early scare when he slid a low shot past the far post after beating the offside trap but they failed to heed the warning and five minutes later he put Barcelona into the lead.

Snapping the ball off the feet of team mate Messi, after the Argentine had darted towards the edge of the area, Eto'o left three defenders for dead with a stunning turn and drilled past a helpless Casillas.

The Cameroon striker, who joined Barca after Real chief Florentino Perez rejected an option to buy him at the start of last season, ran to the corner in front of the president's box with his arm in the air pointing to the club crest on his shirt.

Real tried to fight their way back into the game but with Barca depriving them of possession the only problems they created for the opposition back four were from set pieces.

VENOMOUS SHOT

Barca almost extended their lead when the electric Messi fired off a venomous shot after bursting into the area but Casillas came to the rescue with a fine reflex save.

It was one-way traffic once more in the second half as the ball remained glued to the feet of the Barcelona players and Real were left chasing shadows in midfield.

Zidane looked well short of match fitness, Ronaldo and Robinho were starved of the ball and David Beckham had little influence on affairs.

Barca stretched their lead 15 minutes into the second half when Ronaldinho waltzed through the Real defence.

Picking the ball up some 40 metres out on the left, the Brazilian left Sergio Ramos sprawling with a quick shuffle of the feet, skipped past centre back Ivan Helguera and fired a perfectly placed shot past Casillas into the far corner.

The Brazilian repeated the trick 18 minutes later when he bamboozled Ramos again, sped into the area and drilled home at the near post to wrap up a one-sided victory for the Catalans.

The magic continues (4-1)

BARÇA BITE

The goals

1-0, Eto'o (min. 30)
2-0, Messi (min. 51)
3-0, Ronaldinho (pen.) (min. 56)
4-0, Sylvinho (min. 65)
4-1, Casquero (pen.) (min. 70)

Barcelona continued their excellent run of form as they overwhelmed Racing Santander in Camp Nou (4-1). A superb goal from Samuel Eto'o and another great performance from Ronaldinho were the highlights of yet another fantastic win.

The magic is not just confined not confined to Ronaldinho though and all the other players showed that the entire team is playing superbly as they all contributed to another exciting night. The high-speed attack, the dangerous crosses, the incisive passing, the quick movement and the strong defence were all key features in the win. Every one of Frank Rijkaard's men put in another exemplary display as the Barça machine continues to thrill the football world.

A false start

The action started very early as José Moratón fouled Rafael Márquez in the area and the referee immediatly pointed to the spot. Ronaldinho sent the ball towards his usual corner, but Dud Aouate had obviously done his homework dived to his right to keep out the spot-kick. The save did not effect the home side's morale though and they continued to press forward in numbers and continued to play the ball around with every member of the team becoming involved in the build-up play.

Racing did not employ the stifling defensive tactics that have been the trademark of so many away sides this term and this allowed Barça to play their open game with Deco controlling things from the centre of the park. Ronaldinho was producing the tricks and skills that the home fans have become accustomed to while Leo Messi revelled in his return to the side as the Argentinian star produced one run that ended with his goalbound effort deflecting off a defender and away for a corner.

Eto'o conjures a goal from nothing

Barcelona dominated possesion and created numerous chances, but the opening goal did not arrive until the half-hour mark and when it did it was well worth the wait. Eto'o stole the ball off Vitolo in the Barcelona half and began to speed towards the Racing penalty area. It looked impossible for the Cameroon striker to find a way through the crowd of defenders and a pass to Ronaldinho looked to be on the cards.

Eto'o was having none of that though and he headed straight into the four Racing players and with two touches found himself breezing past them to create the smallest of gaps from where he clipped the ball with the instep and watched as it beat Aouate and nestled just inside the far post. It was an incredible strike from the Spanish league's top goalscorer that showed great technique, intelligence and a killer instinct.

Messi and Ronaldinho

The first half started with a penalty and the second half began with two goals. After several crosses from the left by Sylvinho, Racing were not watching the right hand side and they paid dearly. Deco won the ball in midfield and laid it off to Eto'o who in turn rolled it out to Messi and the 18-year-old sped towards the area before side-stepping a defender and sliding the ball past the keeper with just six minutes on the clock.

Four minutes later and Barcelona were three goals ahead as Ronaldinho won a second penalty for the home side as Pinillos blatantly brought him down in the area. Instead of passing the responsibility to a team-mate, the Brazilian was desperate to make up for his earlier miss and he went the same way again with his second effort, but this time it had more power and more lift and left Aouate with no chance of repeating his earlier heroics and gave the Barça star his 50th goal in the club's colours.

The party goes on

Barcelona's supporters were now in party mood as the team's eighth consecutive win was already sealed and the players were clearly in good spirits too as Carles Puyol chanced his arm as a winger as he ran down the pitch before delivering a cross that was cleared by the head of a Racing defender. The fourth goal arrived in the 65th minute as another defender ventured forward as Sylvinho picked up a pass from Deco before making his way goalwards and as a defender attempted to clear the ball the left-back was grateful to see it bounce off his own legs and into the back of the net.

As the celebrations took place for the final Barça goal, Rijkaard continued his rotation system as he introduced Ludovic Giuly in place of Leo Messi and the youngster received rapturous applause from the crowd as he left the pitch. The party was interrupted when Racing were awarded a penalty when Márquez was harshly penalised for blocking a point-blank cross from David Aganzo was his arm and Casquero fired from the spot.

Aganzo was then sent off for elbowing Márquez in the head while jumping for a high ball and with the numerical advantage Barcelona continued to look to add to their tally. Giuly and Eto'o both went close near the end, but it was not to be.
