In the north, mopping-up operations continue in the 8th district. Meanwhile, in the north-east, Russian forces have semi-encircled the high-rise buildings in the Dinas district and continue to clear the Karakovsky district. Approximately 90% of the city is now under Russian control.

Meanwhile, in the north, Russian troops are increasing pressure on Ukrainian Army in Myrnohrad, which has been left in an operational encirclement as the bottleneck narrows. In this city, Ukrainian forces are retreating from the Damanskyi district in the north and from the urban areas south of mine 5/6.

Despite reports, there is no physical encirclement of Myrnohrad, but there is little possibility of leaving the city. Ukrainian soldiers remaining there (less than a thousand) are holding their positions thanks to supplies delivered by drone, while Russian forces continue to press on the eastern outskirts (some advances were made near the Damanskyi district). Meanwhile, Russian forces have begun an assault on the defences south of the semi-envelope, meaning that the Ukrainian army's presence in Lysivka and Sukhyi Yar is likely to be a matter of days or hours.

Far west, fighting continues at the Krasnoarmeyskaya-Zapadnaya No. 1 mine between Ukrainian army and Russian forces after the latter failed to gain a foothold two weeks ago. The mine has suffered considerable damage as a result of the fighting.

Further south, Russian forces took control of the first trench systems north of Lysivka, which is being combed after Ukrainian army withdrew from the locality.

In the north, reconnaissance groups continue to operate around the pig farms, further supporting the impossibility of land supplies to Ukrainian forces besieged in Myrnohrad. It is in this city that there is still great resistance by the besieged despite their situation, however, the defences are becoming weaker. In the Damanskyi district, the Russians have taken new high-rise buildings, and in the eighth district, they have reached the former boarding school, while in the south, fighting has reached Soborna Street.

Even being agnostic about whether these numbers are precise, Ukrainian drone operators would have exorbitant kill to loss ratios. They inflict most of the Russian casualties and take few of their own.

The issue is that this process cuts both ways, and on the other side of the war there are Russian drone units like Rubicon that are shredding the AFU’s mechanized brigades, many of which have a tiny fraction of their infantry components left.

Bragging narrowly about the K/D of drone units speaks to a sort of “warlordism” in Ukraine that celebrates the exploits of prestige units while ignoring the overall dynamics and trajectory of the drone war.

You can’t celebrate the effectiveness of your own UAV operators while ignoring the thousands of Ukrainian infantrymen who are being ground up by the same tactical problem. An army is an organic whole, it can’t survive as a split personality of lauded prestige units and forgotten fodder.

___________

The drone question aside, this has been a general problem of the Armed Forces of Ukraine that has been turning into a real strategic headache. Their good units get better over time, because they get more PR, more money, better equipment, preference in picking recruits, preferences in logistics and reinforcements, and so on, while their bad units get worse over time.

Some of this is based on "office politics", not combat performance, making matters even worse.

The problem with shitty units getting even shittier is that their area of responsibility doesn't get smaller and the Russian forces opposing them don't get shittier in the same way, which means they do even worse, which means they get even less stuff, which means they get even shittier, and so on. A vicious cycle. At some point they just can't do their job anymore, which is how you get breakthroughs and encirclements and so on. This is also a great incentive for them to lie, because if you're in command of a shitty unit and your shitty unit does badly and you actually tell your superiors, you get punished for it and more of your men will die, and your unit will perform even worse.

The good units, meanwhile, get larger and better, but they can't really bring their quality to the field because they get torn to small tactical pieces that are forced to act as firefighters in whichever sector of the front is in crisis at the moment, leaving no room for initiative: their entire job is to plug the holes left by shitty units doing badly.

Fighting has returned to the town of Chasov Yar. Following the Russian capture of Chasov Yar in early August, fighting on the outskirts has continued intermittently. Without expanding the buffer zone to the west of the city, Ukrainian army has made numerous attempts to infiltrate the first neighbourhoods again. In October, Ukrainian forces managed to enter the Pivdennyi district and take over a large part of it, as well as the electrical substation, which allowed them to expand their operations further east. In the first week of November, Ukrainian troops managed to take the first parts of the Levanevskoho district, where fighting continues today. Situation on Mirnograd & Pokrovsk fronts: In the last ten days, Russian army has managed to advance beyond the railway line, taking control of several positions north of Kotlyne and west of Pokrovsk. Within the city, fighting has decreased in intensity. Despite the “capture” of Pokrovsk by Russian forces (basically because Ukrainian troops are no longer present in most districts), operations to comb the area and strengthen positions will take days, so the official announcement of its capture could be delayed until the end of the month. For the moment, fighting is taking place in the northern dachas.

Meanwhile, in the south, Russian troops managed to completely capture Lysivka and began to secure Sukhyi Yar after Ukrainian withdrawal there.

Also in Myrnohrad, Ukrainian army continues to retreat from the eastern neighborhoods. As a result of the abandonment of the 8th district, the Russians managed to take over much of it, approaching Tsentralna Mine.

Situation on Mirnograd & Pokrovsk fronts: Northeast of Kotlyne, Russian army continues its advance and has taken control of a new trench system halfway between the T-04-06 and M30 highways. In Pokrovsk, while consolidation operations continue in the urban area, Russian forces continue to advance in the east, taking control of the postal center until reaching Ahrarna Street.

In the semi-encirclement, Ukrainian army has begun to show signs of weakness. In the south, combing operations are already taking place in Sukhyi Yar after the Ukrainian retreat to Myrnohrad. There, in the southern part, Ukrainian troops have retreated west of Tolbukhina Street and the Zapadny microdistrict, where Russian forces are pressing in order to cut off communication with the northern part of the city. An advance from Kohozhkine is also taking place, which could lead to the encirclement of the southern group of Ukrainian troops already under siege. In the northern part of the city, the surrender of Ukrainian soldiers has also accelerated Russian advances in the Damanskyi microdistrict, where mopping-up operations are also underway.
