On March 25, Russian satellites photographed Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. Two days later, an Iranian missile navigating on Chinese BeiDou satellite data struck the base and destroyed an American E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft worth $300 million, wounding twelve US service members. American air defences built with Chinese rare earth magnets tried to intercept the missile built with Chinese navigation and Chinese propellant. They failed. On March 30, a Russian tanker carrying 730,000 barrels of crude oil arrived at Cuba’s Matanzas port after sailing through the US naval blockade without interception. President Trump said on Air Force One: “I have no problem with it, whether it’s Russia or not. They have to survive.”
Russia provided the intelligence. China provided the navigation and propellant for the missile. China provided the magnets for the interceptor. The next day, the United States let Russia deliver oil to an island 90 miles from Florida. Same war. Same week. Same president. Every transaction runs through the same two countries.
This is not hypocrisy. This is triage. The United States faces three adversaries simultaneously. It cannot confront all three. Iran gets the bombs. China gets the negotiating table. Russia gets a pass on Cuba because intercepting one tanker in the Caribbean is a confrontation the US cannot afford while burning through 2,400 Patriot interceptors in the Gulf, each one containing Chinese rare earth magnets that China has not agreed to resupply.
Cuba has been under US energy blockade since January, with 20-hour daily blackouts shutting hospitals. The White House said “no policy change” and “case-by-case.” Translation: we cannot enforce this blockade because every resource is committed elsewhere.
The elsewhere is Iran. The elsewhere is 2,400 fired interceptors the US cannot replace without Chinese minerals. The elsewhere is an E-3 that Boeing stopped manufacturing in 1992. The elsewhere is a strait carrying 20 percent of the world’s oil, closed on Day 31 because every American ally in the Gulf is absorbing Iranian retaliation for hosting US bases. The elsewhere is Isfahan burning and a supertanker ablaze off Dubai. The elsewhere is Dar in Beijing right now, asking the country that built the components inside every weapon on every side to broker the peace. Cuba is not the priority. Cuba is the price.
Russia knows this. Russia sent the tanker because it knew the US could not intercept. If the precedent holds, Moscow demonstrates to every sanctioned nation on earth that American blockades have a humanitarian exception you can drive a supertanker through.
Russia arms Iran with satellite intelligence and upgraded drones. China equips Iranian missiles with BeiDou navigation and ammonium perchlorate propellant. Russia delivers oil to Cuba through the American blockade. China controls the rare earth magnets the US needs to build the interceptors to defend against the missiles China helped arm. And China will not release those minerals until the US comes to the table with tariff relief, semiconductor concessions, and Taiwan assurances.
Every path through this war passes through Beijing. The missile that destroyed the E-3 was guided by Chinese satellites. The interceptor that tried to stop it was built with Chinese magnets. The replacement cannot be manufactured without Chinese minerals China has refused to sell. The peace talks are happening in Beijing today. And Russia just sailed a tanker through the American blockade 90 miles from the country that needs Chinese cooperation to survive the war that Chinese technology is sustaining on both sides.
The tanker Russia sent to Cuba is not about Cuba. It is about the hierarchy of American power when every weapon in every arsenal traces back to the same supplier. For the first time since the Cold War, that hierarchy is visible to everyone. And the view from Beijing has never been better.
