Anxious for an apocalyptic event in December 2012, when the Mayan calendar is supposedly ending, New Agers and ufologists are claiming that they have discovered three large objects headed to earth. They say that the objects are actually flying saucers and that scientists have calculated that they will arrive at earth in mid-December, 2012, right about the time that the world will end.
This latest theory started with
an Examiner article penned by Andrew Wozny earlier this month, who writes,

SETI astrophysicist Craig Kasnov. Don’t take his word for it you can check it out for yourself. He recommends to go to the site

The project participants are assured that the facilities are absolutely real, and the American space agency NASA is trying to conceal important information.

The problem with the theory is that
Craig Kasnov is not an
astrophysicist with
SETI. He was involved with the conception of
the SETI at home computing project in 1994 and the alleged spaceship is reportedly a defect in the Sky Map images.
Nonetheless, the belief that
UFOs are coming to earth in 2012 persists, with videos being uploaded to YouTube constantly.
There are older, alien-related theories that have endured much longer than the recent "
Kasnov conspiracy."
In France, the mayor of the tiny village Bugarach says he may need to call upon the army for help in 2012. The village with a population of less than 200 people sits at the foot of the Pic de Bugarach mountain, where a gigantic spacecraft is supposed to be hidden. The village has been besieged by doomsdayers who believe that it is protected from the 2012 cataclysm because the hidden UFO has transformed the area into a sacred spot. The UK's
Telegraph reports that "esoteric" visitors are taking over the small town's tourism industry and are buying up properties and inflating property values. The
Telegraph also reports that mayor Jean-Pierre Delord says that the situation is no laughing matter.
"If tomorrow 10,000 people turn up, as a village of 200 people we will not be able to cope. I have informed the regional authorities of our concerns and want the army to be at hand if necessary come December 2012."
Mr Delord said people had been coming to the village for the past 10 years or so in search of alien life following a post in an UFO review by a local man, who has since died. "He claimed he had seen aliens and heard the humming of their spacecraft under the mountain," he said.
The internet abounds with tales of the late President François Mitterrand being curiously heliported on to the peak, of mysterious digs conducted by the Nazis and later Mossad, the Israeli secret services.
The 2012 prediction has spawned its own cottage industry. Companies such as "Hardened Structures" offer
2012 doomsday shelters that are supposed to protect people from nuclear, biological, chemical, earthquake and EMP hazards.
The "official" 2012 website offers a store filled with survival manuals and gear, together with an exhaustive compendium of prophesies about 2012.
