NEWS STORY 28 REASONS WHY REDS SHOULD BE PROUD
Paul Eaton 25 May 2009
We all know first place is everything at Anfield, but despite missing out on the Barclays Premier League by the slenderest of margins there are still plenty of reasons why we can look back with pride on our 2008-09 campaign. Whether it be amassing a record points total, leading the goalscoring charts, enjoying our best away form for over one hundred years or completing memorable league doubles over both Manchester United and Chelsea, the past nine months have provided numerous reasons why we can look forward to the new campaign with hopes and expectations high.

We may not have ended the season as champions of England this time - but here are 28 reasons why we should feel positive when reflecting on the latest season in our glorious history.

The Reds amassed their highest points total ever in the Premier League (86) beating the 82 set in 2005-06. It is our highest in the league since 1987-88.

The total of 86 points is more than we needed to clinch 12 of our 18 league titles (all seasons based on three points for a win).

We won 14 points against the other members of the ‘Big Four’. It was as many points as we had won against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United in the previous three seasons put together.

Liverpool scored 77 league goals this season – our best since 1990-91 when we also scored 77, and finished second in the title race to Arsenal.

16 players scored in the league this season – one fewer than the club record set in 1911-12.

We finished the campaign with a goal difference of +50 - our best for 21 years when we amassed +63 in 1987-88.

The Reds went through a league campaign at Anfield undefeated for the 10th time in their history and for the first time since 1987-88.

We extended our unbeaten run of league games at home to 30 – the best run for 28 years and equalled the fourth best sequence in our history.

We amassed seven more points than when we last won the title in 1989-90 (then it was 79).

We equalled the club record set in 1904-05 by winning 13 away league games.

Liverpool amassed 43 away points this season - the most in our history.

We finished the season averaging 2.26 points per game – the second best ever average in our 94 seasons in the top-flight. The best is 2.33 points in 1978-79 (98 points from 42 games based on 3 pts for a win).

We scored at least three goals in five successive league games for the first time since 1987.

And we netted at least three goals in six successive games in all competitions for the first time in the club’s history.

We only lost two league games this season - our best record since 1987-88 when we also lost twice. That season we drew 12 games but still won the title by nine points from Manchester United.

We became the first team ever to lose only two games in a season and not go on to win the league. Chelsea in 2007-08, 2006-07 and Nottingham Forest 1978-79 were all runners-up having lost three games.

Liverpool ended Chelsea's 86-match unbeaten home record with a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.

We recorded the club's first league ‘double’ over Chelsea for 19 years.

A Yossi Benayoun goal ensured we became only the second English team to win in the Bernabeu.

And at Anfield we inflicted upon Real Madrid their biggest ever Champions League defeat as we went goal crazy with a 4-0 win.

Overall we sent Madrid crashing to their heaviest two-legged European defeat in the knockout stages for 20 years.

We recorded our biggest win at Old Trafford for 72 years. It was also the first time four Liverpool players had scored at United in the same game.

Rafael Benitez broke Bill Shankly’s record of 65 European matches as Liverpool manager.

The boss also broke Bob Paisley’s record of 40 European wins.

Rafa recorded his 100th league win as manager in his 181st game. It was the 3rd quickest ever by a Liverpool manager and 50 games faster than Alex Ferguson.

Liverpool have lost only six league games in total in the last two seasons. Manchester United have lost nine. Arsenal have also lost nine and Chelsea eight.

Liverpool finished the season as leading scorers in the Premier League. They scored 77 compared to Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, who all scored 68.

The Reds boast the highest goals per game average of any team in all four divisions in England (1.93 goals per game) and will finish the season as such unless one of the following happens – Manchester United score nine in the Champions League Final or Chelsea score six in the F.A. Cup Final.

NEWS STORY EL NINO'S 50: THE DEFINITIVE LIST
James Carroll 26 May 2009
Fernando Torres' header against Tottenham on Sunday took his total goals tally for the Reds to 50. Liverpoolfc.tv looks back on El Nino's half-century. To watch a montage of Torres' 50 goals click here>>
Since arriving at Anfield in July 2007, Torres has established himself as one of the finest strikers in world football.

Tap-ins, long-range specials, headers, volleys... the Spain international has demonstrated he is capable of scoring any type of goal and has quite a collection of stunning strikes in his repertoire.

To celebrate El Nino's half century, Liverpoolfc.tv has compiled a list of his 50 goals for the Reds so sit back, relax and relive some classic moments from our number nine.

Goal 1 – Chelsea
Barclays Premier League
19 August 2007

Torres announced his arrival in English football in spectacular style with a goal on his Anfield debut.

Latching on to a piercing Steven Gerrard through-ball, the Reds' new signing glided past Chelsea defender Tal Ben-Haim before dispatching a low shot beyond Petr Cech into the bottom corner.

Goal 2 – Derby County
Barclays Premier League
1 September 2007

The Spaniard claimed his second and third goals for Liverpool as the Reds hammered Derby 6-0 at Anfield to go top of the Premier League table. Javier Mascherano's challenge 25-yards from the Derby goal pushed the ball into Torres' possession.

He left the opposition defenders for dead and slotted the ball into the bottom corner via his left boot in the 56th minute.

Goal 3 – Derby County
Barclays Premier League
1 September 2007

Torres put the seal on a comprehensive victory for the Reds as he netted Liverpool's sixth and final goal of the afternoon.

Derby defender Andy Todd failed to deal with Andriy Voronin's lobbed ball forward, allowing Torres to go through on goal, effortlessly round goalkeeper Stephen Bywater and slide the ball into an empty net.

Goal 4 – Reading
Carling Cup third round
25 September 2007

Having been named as a substitute for the Reds' match with Birmingham City the previous Saturday, Torres marked his return to Liverpool's starting line-up with a memorable hat-trick at the Madejski Stadium.

His first came early in the second half as Sebastian Leto's pass sent the Spanish international through on goal. El Nino held off the advances of Reading defender Andre Bikey before dispatching a low shot into the bottom corner.

Goal 5 – Reading
Carling Cup third round
25 September 2007

His second of the evening arrived in the 72nd minute. John Arne Riise's cut-back from the byline found Torres, who opened up his body brilliantly to turn the ball into the far corner from 12-yards.

Goal 6 – Reading
Carling Cup third round
25 September 2007

Torres completed his first hat-trick in English football as he collected a Steven Gerrard through ball, leaving the defence trailing in his wake, before nonchalantly rounding Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici to cap a wonderful night for the Reds' record signing.

Goal 7 – Tottenham Hotspur
Barclays Premier League
7 October 2007

Spurs had twice taken the lead at Anfield courtesy of a Robbie Keane double and it looked as though the three points were heading to White Hart Lane until Torres headed home Steve Finnan's deep cross to salvage a point for Liverpool in stoppage-time.

Goal 8 – Fulham
Barclays Premier League
10 November 2007

Torres came off the bench to score a brilliant individual goal to break Fulham's resistance and put Liverpool on their way to three points.

The Spaniard chested down Pepe Reina's long goal-kick before turning and running at the Fulham defence.

El Nino left Aaron Hughes floundering before calmly beating Antti Niemi with a clever reverse shot into the bottom corner from 10 yards.

Goal 9 – FC Porto
Champions League group stage
28 November 2007

Torres claimed his first Champions League goals with a brace on an exhilarating night for Liverpool that saw the Reds move a step closer to qualification for the knock-out phase of the tournament.

His first came early in the first half as Torres escaped the attentions of two Porto defenders to plant a downward header into the back of the net from Steven Gerrard's corner.

Goal 10 - FC Porto
Champions League group stage
28 November 2007

It looked as though the game would be heading for a draw until Torres claimed his second of the evening with a well taken goal in the 78th minute.

Collecting Harry Kewell's pass, Liverpool's number nine turned his marker inside the box before curling a shot into the far corner of the goal to sent Anfield into raptures.

Goal 11 – Bolton Wanderers
Barclays Premier League
2 December 2007

El Nino scored on the stroke of half-time to send Liverpool into the interval two goals to the good.

Steven Gerrard was once again the provider as his long-pass sliced open the Bolton defence, sending Torres through on goal and the Spaniard deftly lifted the ball over the advancing Jussi Jaaskelainen with a finish not too dissimilar to Kenny Dalglish's winning goal in the 1978 European Cup Final against Bruges.

Goal 12 – Marseille
Champions League
11 December 2007

Our number nine has a number of exquisite goals in his collection but this was one of his finest.

With Liverpool needing a victory in France to secure a place in the last 16 of the Champions League, the Reds overwhelmed Marseille and took an early two goal lead.

Torres netted the second; after collecting Harry Kewell's pass on the left edge of the area, he bamboozled the Marseille defence with a mazy run before calmly rolling the ball into the bottom corner.

Goal 13 – Portsmouth
Barclays Premier League
22 December 2007

Torres helped himself to another brace as Liverpool made the perfect start to the Festive period with a 4-1 romp against Portsmouth.

His first came in the 67th minute when he calmly rolled the ball into the bottom corner after Pompey 'keeper David James had inadvertently deflected it into his path.

Goal 14 - Portsmouth
Barclays Premier League
22 December 2007

The Spanish international rounded off another good afternoon's work with his second goal five minutes from time.

Jamie Carragher's lofted ball into the area was headed back to Torres by Steven Gerrard and the striker clinically dispatched a left-footed volley into the bottom corner.

Goal 15 – Derby County
Barclays Premier League
26 December 2007

Another game and another superb goal from Liverpool's talismanic centre forward.

Torres put the Reds ahead after 11 minutes with a festive cracker. Ryan Babel laid the ball off and the Spaniard burst into the box, nutmegging Darren Moore en route, before curling a shot into the far corner via his left boot.

Goal 16 – Wigan Athletic
Barclays Premier League
2 January 2008

On a bitterly cold January evening at Anfield, Torres fired Liverpool into an early second-half lead with his 10th Premier League goal.

A well worked move resulted in Steven Gerrard releasing Steve Finnan into the right hand channel and his low cross was turned past Chris Kirkland by El Nino from 10 yards.

Goal 17 – Middlesbrough
Barclays Premier League
12 January 2008

With Liverpool trailing, Torres collected possession 25 yards from goal and ran at the Boro defence before drilling an unstoppable strike in off the post to earn the Reds a point.

Goal 18 – Sunderland
Barclays Premier League
2 February 2008

El Nino netted Liverpool's second goal with a trademark finish as the Reds cruised to a 3-0 victory over Sunderland.

Torres was put through on goal Peter Crouch's flick-on and the end result was never in doubt as he slammed the ball past Craig Gordon.

Goal 19 – Middlesbrough
Barclays Premier League
23 February 2008

Torres became the first Liverpool player to score 20 goals or more in a season since Michael Owen in 2002/03 with a treble against Middlesbrough.

His first was something of a gift as Julio Arca's header towards his own goal on 28 minutes only succeeded in finding the lurking Torres.

The Reds' number nine didn't need a second invitation to equalise as he kept his composure to round the goalkeeper and roll the ball into an empty net.

Goal 20 - Middlesbrough
Barclays Premier League
23 February 2008

The Spanish star claimed his second in as many minutes. This time, fed by Fabio Aurelio, he powered a low drive into the left corner from 25 yards.

Goal 21 - Middlesbrough
Barclays Premier League
23 February 2008

El Nino completed his hat-trick on the hour mark.

Dirk Kuyt's cross-field pass drew Boro goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer to the edge of his area but Torres beat both he, and defender David Wheater, to the ball and lofted it into the unguarded goal at the Kop end.

Goal 22 – West Ham United
Barclays Premier League
5 March 2008

Torres became the first Reds striker since Jack Balmer in 1946 to score successive hat-tricks at Anfield as he followed up his treble against Middlesbrough 10 days earlier with another three against West Ham.

He notched his first of the evening after just eight minutes when he got ahead of his marker to steer Dirk Kuyt's cross from the right past Robert Green with the side of his right boot.

Goal 23 – West Ham United
Barclays Premier League
5 March 2008

The Spaniard netted his second on the hour mark, with Dirk Kuyt claiming another assist.

This time the Dutchman's cross back into the area following a half-cleared Reds corner was precisely headed home from close-range by Torres.

Goal 24 – West Ham United
Barclays Premier League
5 March 2008

Torres finally sealed his hat-trick with 10 minutes remaining, having earlier rattled the post with a powerful diving header.

Pouncing on to John Arne Riise's header into the box, the Reds' striker dinked the ball through the legs of the hapless Lucas Neill and steered it across the body of Robert Green into the bottom corner for league goal number 18 of his debut season at Anfield.

Goal 25 – Newcastle United
Barclays Premier League
8 March 2008

El Nino continued a rich vein of form with another superlative strike as his partnership with Steven Gerrard continue to blossom.

Torres headed the ball down to Gerrard on the half-way line and the Reds' skipper charged at the Newcastle defence before playing an incisive pass into the run of our number nine.

The Spaniard sold 'keeper Steve Harper an outrageous dummy and slid the ball into the back of the net for his 25th goal of the season.

Goal 26 – Inter Milan
Champions League last 16, second-leg
11 March 2008

Torres capped an unforgettable night at the San Siro with the only goal of the game as Liverpool beat Inter Milan 3-0 on aggregate to move into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The priceless away goal for the Reds arrived on 64 minutes and once again it was courtesy of something special from the boots of Liverpool's brilliant striker.

Fabio Aurelio's pass from the left found Torres on the edge of the area. In a flash, he spun his marker and dispatched a half-volley into the bottom corner with unerring accuracy.

Goal 27 – Reading
Barclays Premier League
15 March 2008

Torres reached the 20 league goals milestone against Reading, becoming the first Liverpool player since Robbie Fowler in 1995/96 to achieve the feat.

The Reds' number nine lost his marker to plant a firm header past Marcus Hahnemann to claim his ninth goal in six games.

Goal 28 - Everton
Barclays Premier League
30 March 2008

El Nino marked his first Merseyside derby with the only goal of the game to help Liverpool complete a league double over Everton.

Xabi Alonso reclaimed possession on the edge of the Everton box after the Blues had attempted to clear from a corner and Dirk Kuyt flicked the ball into Torres' path inside the box.

The outcome was inevitable as the Spaniard drilled low across the body of Tim Howard in front of the Kop.

Goal 29 – Arsenal
Champions League quarter-final, second leg
8 April 2008

Torres made his mark on another special European night at Anfield with a simply stunning goal.

Peter Crouch's flick-on found Torres just inside the box and he turned his marker in a heartbeat before firing home into the top corner to send the Kop into delirium early in the second half.

Goal 30 – Blackburn Rovers
Barclays Premier League
13 April 2008

The landmarks continued to come for El Nino as he became the first player in Liverpool history to net in seven successive top-flight games at Anfield with a goal against Blackburn.

It came eight minutes from time when he met a Steven Gerrard cross at the back post with a fine header to beat goalkeeper Brad Friedel.

Goal 31 - Chelsea
Champions League semi-final, second-leg
30 April 2008

Torres scored Liverpool's first goal under Rafael Benitez at Stamford Bridge to give fans hope of reaching another Champions League final.

Yossi Benayoun's jinking run saw him thread the ball through to Torres inside the box and the Spaniard kept his cool under pressure to sweep a low shot past Petr Cech.

Goal 32 – Manchester City
Barclays Premier League
4 May 2008

El Nino signed off from Anfield in his debut season with yet another goal in front of the Kop.

Torres' electric pace left City defender Richard Dunne for dead before the striker slipped the ball into the far corner of the goal.

Goal 33 – Tottenham Hotspur
Barclays Premier League
11 May 2008

Torres netted his 24th league goal of the season to beat Ruud van Nistelrooy's record for most league goals by a foreigner in a debut season in English football.

The goal came in the 74th minute when the striker turned a Tottenham defender inside out before sliding the ball under the body of Spurs 'keeper Radek Cerny.

Goal 34 – Sunderland
Barclays Premier League
16 August 2008

Torres struck a late winner to get Liverpool's season off to a winning start on the opening day of the 08/09 Premiership season.

With the game heading for a draw, the Spanish striker picked up Xabi Alonso's pass and lashed a ferocious shot into the bottom corner from 25-yards to secure the three points.

Goal 35 – Everton
Barclays Premier League
27 September 2008

El Nino ended something of a mini-goal drought by his own high standards with a derby double against Everton in the sunshine.

Torres struck twice in three minutes to secure a 2-0 victory for Liverpool, with the first goal coming on 59 minutes when the Spaniard ghosted in at the far post to deftly volley Robbie Keane's cross through the legs of Tim Howard.

Goal 36 – Everton
Barclays Premier League
27 September 2008

Torres added his, and Liverpool's, second within minutes of his first when he showed his predatory instincts by pouncing on a loose ball inside the area and hammering a shot into the roof of the net from 10 yards.

Goal 37 – Manchester City
Barclays Premier League
5 October 2008

Our number nine set Liverpool on their way to a remarkable comeback against Manchester City at Eastlands.

With City leading 2-0, Torres got ahead of his marker to steer Alvaro Arbeloa's cross over the line from close-range early in the second half.

Goal 38 – Manchester City
Barclays Premier League
5 October 2008

The Spain striker then drew Liverpool level when he met Steven Gerrard's corner with a near-post run and thumping header before Dirk Kuyt completed the comeback with an injury-time winner.

Goal 39 - Preston North End
FA Cup third round
3 January 2009

El Nino marked his return from injury with a stoppage-time goal to seal victory over plucky Preston at Deepdale.

Steven Gerrard burst clear before sliding the ball across goal to give Torres the simple task of tapping in to an empty net from close-range.

Goal 40 - Chelsea
Barclays Premier League
1 February 2009

Torres sent Anfield wild with two late goals to clinch a 2-0 victory over Chelsea for Liverpool.

His first came in the 89th minute as the striker got in front of defender Alex to head Fabio Aurelio's centre from the left past Petr Cech.

Goal 41 - Chelsea
Barclays Premier League
1 February 2009

Nando's second arrived just moments later. Yossi Benayoun stole possession from Ashley Cole on the edge of the area before squaring for Torres to tap-home from 10 yards.

Goal 42 - Portsmouth
Barclays Premier League
7 February 2009

It was another late, late show from El Nino as Torres headed a 90th minute winner in a pulsating 3-2 victory over Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Yossi Benayoun collected possession inside the left edge of the area and the Israeli delivered a pin-point centre, which was met by a bullet header from the Reds' number nine that left Pompey stopper David James helpless.

Goal 43 - Real Madrid
Champions League last 16, second-leg
10 March 2009

Torres capped a scintillating solo performance by opening the scoring on a momentous night for Liverpool against Real Madrid.

After a vigorous opening, the Spanish international netted after 16 minutes. Jamie Carragher's long-ball forward was allowed to bounce by Real defender Pepe, allowing Dirk Kuyt to square for Torres to steer beyond Iker Casillas from six yards.

Goal 44 - Manchester United
Barclays Premier League
14 March 2009

El Nino put Liverpool on their way to one of their finest league victories in living memory as the Reds crushed Manchester United 4-1 at Old Trafford.

After falling behind to a Ronaldo penalty, Torres drew the visitors level just before the half hour mark.

The Liverpool number nine forced Nemanja Vidic into misjudging Martin Skrtel's long-ball and the Spanish international used his strength to hold off the United centre-back before clinically slipping a low shot into the bottom corner when one-on-one with Edwin van der Sar.

Еве го и последното продолжение!!!

Goal 45 - Chelsea
Champions League quarter-final, first leg

Torres got the Reds off to a flyer in this one with a fine team goal.

Dirk Kuyt back heeled the ball into the path of Alvaro Arbeloa's marauding run and he crossed for his Spanish international teammate to steer a controlled drive past Petr Cech from 12-yards.

Goal 46 - Blackburn Rovers
Barclays Premier League
11 April 2009

Arguably El Nino's finest solo goal in a Reds shirt.

Jamie Carragher's flighted ball forward was controlled on the chest by Torres, before he swivelled and sent an unstoppable volley over the despairing arms of Paul Robinson in an instant.

Simply sensational.

Goal 47 - Blackburn Rovers
Barclays Premier League
11 April 2009

Nando claimed his second of an emphatic afternoon as he evaded his marker to score with a header from Xabi Alonso's pin-point free-kick.

Goal 48 - Arsenal

Torres scored after 49 minutes to draw Liverpool level in one of the most thrilling matches witnessed at Anfield for many years.

The 25-year-old rose highest to meet Dirk Kuyt's cross and plant an unstoppable header beyond the reach of Gunners' goalie Lukasz Fabianski.

Goal 49 - Arsenal
Barclays Premier League
21 April 2009

El Nino smashed home a deserved second on 72 minutes to level the scoreline at 3-3.

Collecting the ball with his back to goal, Torres created half a yard of space for himself against Mikael Silvestre before guiding a low shot into the bottom corner.

Goal 50 - Tottenham Hotspur
Barclays Premier League
24 May 2009

The final day of the season... not that much to play for... but don't tell that to El Nino as the Spanish striker placed a brilliant header past Gomes in the Tottenham goal from Dirk Kuyt's deep right wing cross.

How the 50 were scored

Right-foot: 34
Left-foot: 5
Header: 11

Inside box: 45
Outside box: 5

Barclays Premier League: 39
Champions League: 7
FA Cup: 1
