I'd like the security of one more major signing for central defence. Van Buyten is probably gone. Boateng's game has gradually improved to the point that he almost certainly deserves to be a starter, but he doesn't take a leading role in the defence - say, like Hummels does. Dante didn't perform nearly as well last season as he did the previous season, and he had that confidence shattering 1-7 playing for Brazil against Germany. I would be reluctant to rely too heavily on him this season. Martinez has never really shone as a central defender, except when Bayern played three at the back. I hope we see more of that next season, and Martinez has the central role in the three. He does show some leadership too, which I'd hope he develops. Badstuber has been out for two seasons. I'd hope he returns to improve seamlessly as a central defender - not least because his passing accuracy and deadball delivery were comparable with that of Kroos. And he's a leader. But few players return to their former peak after such long absences, and Bayern need to cover for the possibility that Badstuber doesn't make it. And all this ignores the possibility of (further) injuries to these central defenders. I'd love to see a Boateng-Badstuber partnership when Bayern play four at the back against weaker teams, and a Boateng-Martinez-Badstuber partnership when Bayern play three at the back against stronger teams. But, even with Dante on the bench, Bayern haven't enough cover for injuries, suspensions and losses of form. At its best, the defence could be world class, but it wouldn't take much for it to become a vulnerable defence that can't challenge at the top levels in Europe. So, I'd like to see the signing of another central defender - not a talent or a squad player, but a top, established player.
