How does Nietzsche fit into the story of Aristotle's Nous? The short answer to this question
is simple: Nietzsche like Aristotle, believes in an intuitional, pre logical approach to Being. But
to answer this question more fully, we must first emphasize something which is often neglected:
Nietzsche is primarily a philosopher, and his critique of culture and metaphysics is primarily
philosophically motivated. As trivial as this might sound, it must be pointed out because, for many
of his readers, he is much more a critic of culture, a poet, and a writer. He is all of that, of course,
but he is, foremost, a philosopher. Today, Nietzsche is part of a popular culture, known for his
quotes and catchwords such as the overman, “God is dead,” the “will to power,” or the eternal
recurrence. Very often, the fact that his critiques of culture and the values of western civilization
are the results of his deep philosophic pondering is simply neglected or forgotten. His own
experience of the fall of western civilization and its values lead him to philosophy, and by studying
the history of philosophy, he recognized the roots of that fall in the ill metaphysical beliefs of that
same civilization. Perhaps no philosopher, other than Heidegger, has more emphasized the relation
between the crisis of civilization and the crisis of the metaphysical beliefs that lie at the foundation
of that civilization.
